Doug originally hails from Central California and relocated to Southern California in 2010. He has been teaching Guitar and Bass for the past 17 years.
Doug began playing Guitar and Bass in 1993, absorbing the music of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Black Crowes, James Brown, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, BB King, Freddie King, Albert King, Robert Johnson, “Old School R&B,” Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Django Reinhardt, Steely Dan, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Johnny Cash, and many others. Soon after realizing his passion was more than a hobby, he enrolled in music theory studies at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo and took private guitar lessons. After 5 years of studying, practicing, writing and playing, he began teaching in 1998.
Throughout his career Doug has written and toured with several successful artists and bands. He is a founding member and songwriter for the Jazz-Funk Fusion quintet, Mother Funk Conspiracy, and from ’99-’05 he toured with Americana/Country Artist and Grammy Nominee, Monty Byrom and Bighouse. Doug currently teaches in Los Angeles and Orange County. He also writes and produces original music with his wife, singer/songwriter, Christina Sikola and Grammy Awardee, Randy Kohrs, in Nashville, TN. Doug currently endorses Tom Anderson Guitars, Blankenship Amplification, Fuchs Audio Technology, Ernie Ball Strings and Dunlop Picks.
Doug’s expansive musical vocabulary includes Pop, Rock, Country, Americana, Jazz, Blues, and R&B genres. His enthusiasm and dedication to studying many different styles of music has helped shape his approach to teaching. Doug’s instruction method focuses on highly individualized lessons, tailored to each student’s musical interests, goals, and skill level. With an emphasis on teaching the fundamentals of music-theory and correct physical technique, Doug ensures that his students have a proper foundation to build upon. He truly enjoys getting to know each of his students, and understands that everyone possesses a unique learning style. After determining which approach is best for each student, Doug creates a specific curriculum and a structured plan to ensure that each student is successful in accomplishing their goals. A consummate student of music himself, Doug encourages, empowers and inspires his students to have fun while learning the language of music!
